How well I remember that January morning in 1965 when I called round to see a friend on the way to school and heard pop music coming out of his radio! At that time of the morning on a normal weekday I would have expected to hear Joe Loss or the BBC Northern Dance Orchestra. Within minutes the presenter had identified himself (Pete Brady) and told me that I was listening to Wonderful Radio London. I was hooked from that moment on. Having later experimented with the dial on my mums valve radio, I found that there were other radio stations such as Caroline and Radio City out there with people enjoying themselves doing a job that I would love doing. After making enquiries and being told by the school careers officer that "Kids who went to school in Kings Cross ... did not get jobs in radio" (wonderful people, careers officers) I left school and took a job in another profession (which still pays the bills). Fast forward to the 1990s and having foolishly turned down an invitation by Chris Carnegie, who has probably been involved in 99% of UK commercial stations, to audition for his latest radio station, I found myself (via hospital radio) at Forest FM in sunny Dorset, working as the mid-morning man. As a listener to Offshore Music Radio, I found myself asking the question "Could I do a programme for them"?.............. E-mail:
